Frequently Asked Questions
Where are you located?
I offer telehealth (virtual) sessions via Simple Practice, Doxy.me, or Google Meet. Once we set up an appointment, you will receive a link to log on through email.
I reside in California and am licensed in California and Florida so I can see clients from either state. Whether you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles County, Orange County, down near San Diego, or even as far as Florida, I’m available to meet you where you are at.
Do you accept insurance?
I am not in network with any insurance providers and the majority of my clients pay out of pocket. However, for individual clients with PPO insurance, there is a possibility for you to apply for reimbursement through something called a “Superbill.” I would not be filing that on your behalf but rather I will provide you with all of the information your insurance company needs to process a reimbursement for your therapy costs.
Here’s how it works:
We have a session.
You would pay out of pocket.
I provide you with a superbill.
You submit the superbill to your PPO insurance provider for reimbursement.
Your insurance provider will process the claim.
I encourage clients considering superbill reimbursement to contact their insurance provider in advance to check if they are eligible for this option. If this is something you’re considering please also talk to me so that I can explain the implications in light of your specific situation.
How much does a session cost?
Each 50-minute session costs $150 for either individuals or couples. Unfortunately, I do not accept insurance. However, I am happy to provide you with a monthly receipt for a service called a “superbill” for PPO insurance reimbursement. Please check with your insurance company to see if they will reimburse you for some of the service costs.
Costs are the same whether you are coming in for a couples session or an individual session:
50-minute sessions cost $150
80-minute sessions are available for $225
Why do you opt not to be in-network with insurance providers?
Insurance companies have the right to request and view your records. They also require a formal diagnosis and may audit personal details about what we discussed. There are a number of circumstances where a record of a formal diagnosis could impede someone if their records are viewed, which is why I take great care when making formal diagnosis. Session length could also be limited due to insurance company policies. I highly value the privacy of my clients and the flexibility to extend the time of a session when it is advantageous to their growth. Not everyone can pay out of pocket. I do understand that. If you need a therapist who can accept insurance I may be able to refer you to a trusted colleague.
How many sessions/weeks of therapy should I anticipate?
Typically we will meet at the same time weekly. Putting a timeline on how many sessions are necessary to accomplish growth and health can be difficult because each client has different needs. Generally speaking, between 6-12 months is a common duration for a lot of people. However, some clients will be in for just a few sessions while others may continue on for multiple years or seek help intermittently when they face a particularly challenging circumstance. We can work together to figure out what you primarily seek during this time and make good use of it.
How do I get the most out of therapy?
Each person has different counseling needs. In fact, some clients have come in for a particular need and, upon further examination, realized there was a lot more to it than what they saw on the surface. I encourage my clients to go at their own pace while also taking initiative. I may share some tools that I think could be helpful to you outside of the session because I believe they can contribute to your growth and progress.
Some of the ways I may encourage this intentionality could be through:
Expanding knowledge through videos, podcasts, books, or other materials
Intentionally practicing techniques learned together
Journaling and processing individually and then bringing some of those insights back into therapy next time so we can look at them together
Practicing tools for emotional regulation
Again, these are tools to empower you, not homework that you will be graded on. Every journey is different and everyone experiences highs and lows while they grow and learn. I’ll work with you to make sure it’s well suited to where you’re at and where you want to go.
